The Wife Between Us
by Greer Hendricks

Mild psychological thriller - enough to keep you enthralled but not enough to keep you up at night - a perfect balance.

Like, Literally, Dude

If you're a proscriptive grammarist, stay clear of this book. But if you are curious about how we got to where we are in language and are particularly interested in the evolution of how we speak nowadays, this is a great book for you. The author looks at common verbal tics that are so annoying to so many, and shows that most of these have been centuries in the making. Are you wondering how we got to where we are with the word literally? Do you wonder about how long ago people started using like in all the different ways that it is used today? Do um and uh serve an important role in communication? When did we start using the singular they and is it actually unusual? I found this book to be an enlightening experience. My only criticism would be that it tends to be a bit redundant and somewhat didactic about certain topics and is not shy about flogging them to death. Overall this is an interesting and educational read.
